To all choristers, ms chan wants you all to consider joining the complaints choir project pls read the info below...
Basically, The Complaints Choir Project is one of the Festival Highlights of the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2008, which will have the overarching theme of Art and History. This is a project initiated by two Finnish artists, Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, who've also done similar Complaints Choirs in Birmingham, Helsinki, St Petersburg and Hamburg. For the first time, the Complaints Choir phenomenon will come to Asia - specifically Singapore!
There will be a two-week period (7 to 25 January 2008, over 5 evenings during the period) where the artists work with Singapore participants who sign up at The Arts House. During this time, the participants will come up with a list of complaints that are specific and pertinent to the city. These complaints will then be made into one song, and at the end of the Festival (on 26 and 27 January 2008), the participants will go out to public places together and sing this "uniquely Singapore" song :)
During the performances, a recording of the actual song will also be done, and a video in an MTV form will also be edited by the artists. These will then become part of the overall Complaints Choir project worldwide, and will accompany the artists as they travel abroad. The videos will be screened online and on the Complaints Choir website, as well as at video installations around the world.
It's an incredibly interactive and fun project, and given the complaint culture we have in Singapore, it's also particularly relevant to this city state.
There is no payment involved for participation in the Singapore Complaints Choir. What we would require is for participants who have a keen interest in singing and, well, as the project title indicates, sharing their complaints with one and all. We also don't "audition" singers :) We take in anyone and everyone who is keen on the project and eager to share his or her complaints with one and all!
However, as this isn't a school project and will involve various individuals from across the board and age groups, we would refrain from inviting your entire school choir to participate. :) What we would prefer is for the information about the choir to be disseminated to them, and interested people sign up individually. Will that be alright?
As mentioned, the rehearsal periods are from 7 - 25 January 2008 (about 5 nights in all) from 7-10pm on selected nights at The Chamber at The Arts House. The performances will take place at various locations (including The Arts House, Esplanade Waterfront Canopy, Speaker's Corner, VivoCity, Merlion Park, and Singapore Art Museum's front lawn) on 26 and 27 January 2008. All performances are free and the exactschedule will be posted on our website at http://www.singaporefringe.com in late Nov/early Dec 2007. However, the schedule as of today is as follows: 8 Jan / Tueday 19:00-22:00 First meeting, choosing the lyrics 13 Jan / Sunday 14:00-17:00 First rehearsal 17 Jan / Thursday 19:00-21:30 Second rehearsal 20 Jan / Sunday 14:00-17:00 Third rehearsal 25 Jan / Friday 19:00-21:30 Fourth rehearsal 26 Jan / Saturday 16:00-18:00 Public performances 27 Jan / Sunday 12:00-14:30 Sound recording for the actual song & 16:00-18:00 Public performances
